Luxury hotel operator Shangri-La won support from the Maldivian Government to transform a 150,000 square metre island in the Addu Atoll, at the southernmost tip of the Maldives archipelago, into a five star resort and spa complex. With a track record of successfully delivering logistically challenging schemes, Mace was appointed as project manager, with overall responsibility for the client-appointed contractors and a multi-national workforce of 2,500. An effective logistics management strategy was key to successful delivery on an island located three days from Male by boat, where all materials, from bricks, light bulbs and paint to cables, plant and tools, had to pass through customs.

In addition to 142 luxury villas and extensive front of house facilities including restaurants, a spa, and a dive centre, the team also had to build and fit out back of house and support buildings ranging from an administration block and M&E services buildings to desalination, sewage treatment, and electrical generation plant. The highest standards of design, materials and build quality were expected and achieved, while meeting strict environmental criteria. The Mace team liaised with the project’s multiple stakeholders, including the Maldivian Government, and worked with the local community to ensure it benefitted from the investment long-term.
