Whether the building is traditional or ultra-modern, undertaking construction projects around priceless artefacts will pose a particular challenge to a museum manager. Change is often made harder still by the exacting funding requirements of government arts bodies, always keen to get good value for public money.
Mace has worked with many museums, undertaking construction and refurbishment works, and helping clients to secure funding. Working with Rick Mather Architects on the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, we refurbished the existing space and provided programme and project management on the new building. This project required the flexible and detailed planning for which Mace is renowned, involved decanting the Museum's artefacts to temporary accommodation during the construction phase, and won Best Project at the 2010 Building Awards. Similiarly, at the British Museum's Great Court, we built the stunning glass ceiling sensitively and in a live building.
Further north, Mace is the client advisor and design coordinator on the team delivering the exciting new Museum of Liverpool, having previously provided a programme and project management service on the base build. Back in London Mace is delivering the British Museum's World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre, providing new logistics, storage, exhibition and scientific facilities for the venerable 250-year-old institution. We also helped the Museum to design a scheme that met planning concerns about how a new build would be integrated with the existing and much-loved building. And it's not just construction: Mace has worked alongside the Imperial War Museum's facilities team to achieve better value and more efficient use of its estate.
